Lolita's Personality
Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are friendly and intelligent. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can be bored quickly and find ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. If they are not socialized properly macaws may become aggressive and may even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They need to spend at least two to three hours each day in the outdoors to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games, listening to music and learning tricks. They love going to playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. They are not just an excellent pet, but they are also a great companion for children.
They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance to those living nearby. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which could be a problem in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their noise.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are hard to tell apart. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine sex. Once the bird's sex is determined, breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. It is not an easy process, and it is crucial that the owner is patient and realizes that this is not a task to be taken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's care
For decades activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists believed that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the sea.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to work on an arrangement with a group of Lolita Blue & Gold Macaw supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean and not a concrete tank.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that bond with their families until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of space to fly around and exercise.
A gold and blue macaw can be a charming friend that is also quite intelligent. They are known to swiftly learn new words and tricks, and they are extremely adaptable. This bird is a fantastic choice for people who are just starting their journey to avian companionship.
In addition the bird needs plenty of interaction and will bond with her human family members quickly. Blue and gold macaws are known for their loud vocalizations like "flock call" as part of their natural behaviour. They may also squabble or chew on their food at times, especially when they are angry or bored. It is important for prospective pet owners to be aware that this kind of behavior is normal and must be expected.
Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the status of Lolita's health however there are many questions. Akromas and others who have supervised or trained Lolita's health over time are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating more than 115 pounds of salmon capelin, herring and squid per day.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and while the species is threatened in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some say is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
Lolita is beautiful, but her health is declining. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and want to see that she is returned to the wild. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a crippling disease that has left her in a fragile state.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit group, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. They show that she is ageing quickly and her health is deteriorating.
Since her captor doesn't need to reveal this information, it is unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays a factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than before. The new owner of Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. These plans were too late to save the beloved whale who died on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
